The Mirador Above Orosi
The view that sells the valley, and the reason most people stop here at all.
The View
From the lookout on the road above the town you get the whole thing at once: the valley floor in coffee, the river cutting through it, the church roof somewhere in the middle distance, and the ridge closing it off at the far end.
It is one of those views that photographs badly and works completely in person, because most of what makes it is the depth and the sound of it rather than anything a frame will hold.
When to Be There
Early. The cloud builds from mid morning through the year and by lunchtime the far ridge is often gone entirely. First light with mist still sitting in the bottom of the valley is the version people remember.
Late afternoon can also come good if the day has been dry, but it is a gamble in a place that averages a great deal of rain.
Getting Up There
It is signed from the road between Paraiso and Orosi and there is a recreational area at the top with parking, tables and toilets. It is not a hike. You drive to it.
That does mean it fills up at weekends. On a Sunday you will be sharing it with a good number of families, which is pleasant company but not solitude.
