Hot Springs Without the Queue
Orosi has thermal water and almost none of the crowd that the Arenal springs pull in.

There are thermal pools in and immediately around Orosi town, fed by the same volcanic geology that runs under this whole stretch of the country. They are municipal in feel rather than resort in feel: tiled pools, changing rooms, a snack bar, families.
If your reference point is the landscaped springs up near Arenal, adjust it. This is a swimming pool that happens to be warm, in a valley that happens to be beautiful. It is also a fraction of the price.
Going at the Right Time
Weekday mornings are close to empty. Weekends and school holidays are the opposite, and the water is noticeably busier by mid afternoon.
The pools are outdoors, so the pleasure of them is at its best when the weather is doing something dramatic. Sitting in warm water in light rain with cloud coming down the valley is a specific and excellent experience.
Bring
A towel, because hiring one is not always possible, and something to put wet things in afterwards.
Cash is worth having. Card payment is common now but not universal at the smaller places, and the nearest reliable machine may be back up in Paraiso.
