Driving the Loop from Paraiso
The valley works as a circuit. Done properly it is a full day, not the hour the map suggests.
The Shape of It
From Paraiso the road drops into the valley, runs down past Orosi, crosses the river, comes back up the far side past the lake and the dam, and returns to where it started. On paper it is short.
In practice you will stop constantly, the road surface varies, and there are stretches where meeting a lorry means one of you reversing. Budget the day and it is a good day. Budget ninety minutes and it is a frustrating one.
Doing It the Right Way Round
Go anticlockwise, down through Orosi first. That puts the church and the town early while you are still fresh, the lake in the middle, and the climb back up at the end when the light is good on the water.
It also means the mirador is at the start rather than the finish, which matters because the cloud that ruins that view arrives later in the day.
Conditions
An ordinary hire car is fine in normal weather. After sustained rain, landslips and washouts on the smaller sections are a genuine possibility and locals will know before any app does.
Fill up in Paraiso. Fuel in the valley itself is limited and you do not want to be doing sums about it on the far side of the lake.
